Barbagia Rosso “Ghirada Gurguruò”
In Sardinian, ‘Ghirada’ means a place-name. Simone was one of the first Sardinian winemakers to showcase the various terroirs of his vineyard. Coming from a family of winemakers, this young enthusiast takes over the cellar and follows the path of finesse and elegance, a less-traveled route in the region. Gurguruò is a place-name hosting 30-year-old vines at an altitude of 750 meters. This imparts astonishing freshness and great finesse to the wine. A confidential cuvée produced in 3200 copies.

In the heart of Sardinia, more precisely in Mamoiada, an emblematic village of the Sardinian hinterland, I had the pleasure of meeting Simone, a corpulent man with a kind face. This young winemaker takes over the family estate after obtaining his oenology degree and after traveling to refine his viticulture techniques. Simone inherits lands and vineyards that have never seen any chemical products and continues his work in line with the family philosophy. On his 2.5 hectares of vineyards, he cultivates indigenous grape varieties from the “Barbagia” such as “Cannonau” and “Granatza” with the utmost respect for the terroir and traditions. His motto is simple: “good grapes and nothing else.”
