Erbaluce “Genesis”
Welcome to Carema, a village in northern Piedmont and home to some of the world’s bravest winemakers. Genesis is one of the intriguing stories that shape the local wine culture. Among the unique wines produced in this region, Orange Wine is drawing growing interest.
It is appreciated for its distinctive aromas and vibrant colour. The cuvée Genesis has also helped shape the story of this winegrowing area.
In this remote corner, on the border with the Aosta Valley, the notion of heroic viticulture truly makes sense.
Amid steep slopes and a pruning method that demands near-superhuman effort, Gian Marco of the Monte Maletto estate crafts wines of great finesse, elegance, and personality. Genesis is one of the standout wines made here. Moreover, this commitment to quality is evident in the Orange Wine produced in Carema.
The “Genesis” cuvée is made from Erbaluce, a native variety of northern Piedmont. It’s worth noting that Genesis perfectly reflects this terroir. It offers a delicately aromatic nose and a toothsome, mineral palate with a distinctly mountainous character. Produced through skin maceration, this cuvée delivers a more powerful, intense mouthfeel.

Azianda Agricola Monte Maletto
Nicknamed “L’Eroe” (“the hero” in Italian), Gian Marco and I crossed paths indirectly several years ago. One of his rare bottles found its way into my glass, and it was love at first sip. The delicacy, complexity, and soul of his wine immediately captivated me. This passion for Orange Wine is shared by many—especially for the Genesis cuvée, which continues to fascinate wine lovers.
In 2020, in Carema, I finally met Gian Marco in person. This tiny appellation in northern Piedmont was unknown to me at the time. Indeed, I didn’t even know where it was on the map.
Arriving in front of these magnificent hillsides, I instantly understood that this place carries a remarkable history. Furthermore, Genesis holds a special place in the story that deserves to be told.
Thanks to terraces carved directly into the rock—a testament to human tenacity and love for wine—this extraordinary nectar comes to life. Orange Wine truly reflects the region’s singular character.
One of the peculiarities of this appellation is that it offers Nebbiolo in an almost ancestral expression. Genesis also plays an important role in conveying that sense of terroir.
Carema is a sincere wine: it may feel rugged at first. Nevertheless, with time it reveals all its nobility and finesse through its minerality and its delicate, complex bouquet.
